Diwali is almost here! The festival of lights where people light candles and earthen lamps, eat and distribute sweets, paint rangolis, and bust crackers.
This Diwali let’s try to employ a few changes in our homes and attitude toward the festival and think about our furry friends. As we celebrate this Diwali there are few things to note to make our Furries feel comfortable and enjoy with us :
Recommendation for Stray Furries Care Givers :
🐶 Feed them early as they might want to find a safe shelter during the evening after the noises start.
🐶 Pre-fill water bowls ; drinking water releases their stress
🐶 Make a list of Animal Rescue Centres , Veterinarians ,Animal Welfare Volunteers and Animal Ambulance numbers for emergency
🐶 Make an All -Purpose FirstAid Kit (includes : Cotton/Gauze Bandage/Betadine Solution/Anti-Septic/ Antibiotic Ointment/Adhesive Tape/Disposable Gloves.
No Oral medication should be given without consulting vet.
🐶 If you are collaring them, write your name and contact details on the reflective collar and if not please tag them in some other way so if they are lost can be tracked.
🐶 Let them take shelter in your basement, parking area or premises.
🐶 Educate people around not to throw lit crackers at or towards them. Ensure that burnt crackers are not lying on ground. Animals and birds might step or may sniff or eat them which will be injurious to their health.
Recommendation for House-Furries Parents :
🐶 Keep your pets indoors in a familiar room, play familiar music or cover their ears with cotton or a quilt so that they don’t panic hearing the noise of crackers. Keep doors and windows shut and curtains drawn as anything too bright can make them anxious. However, try not to lock them up alone in a room for too long, as this will only increase their stress.
🐶Make sure that the dog has its potty run before all the festivities start. Avoid walks after noises start as dog can run away in panic. Also hold leash / harness very carefully so you don’t loose the grip.
🐶There are some homeopathic medicines available to calm down the animals which can be given to them. Consult your veterinarian about anti anxiety medecine or shots
🐶Ensure that they have their meals before celebration starts as they might not eat after noises starts. Keep them hydrated.
🐶It is very important to put name tags with your contact number or write all the details on their collars as we know most of the missing cases are reported during festivals. So, they can be easily found in case of any such mishap.
Please keep water outside for birds as well. If you find any pet Or street dog who is lost please secure him and contact animal welfare organizations of your city.
Have a Happy and Safe Diwali!!
