Paws that taught me Compassion

Few years back when me and my wife used to live in a society which had one old female dog living there right from its birth. We came to live in that society when she was around 8 years old. We lived on the 3rd floor of the building and it had no lift. This dog every night use to come up and scatter all the garbage on the staircase. I was very angry, my wife asked me to let it go, but I kept fighting with the society chairman to do something about the dog. Every day we had to find our way through that flith.
One day we came home late and found her searching food on our floor, so we got some food for her and gave her. Actually I was very scared of dogs then, but she started wagging her tail in content. She had her food and we went inside. In the morning we were ready to open the door and find all the garbage scattered but to our surprise she had done nothing and was sleeping peacefully outside our door. She woke up wagged her tail and went downstairs.
Now it became an everyday affair she knew her time to come and have food and used to sleep there. I was happy that no more garbage problem was there. I started to develop an affection for her, my wife who loved dogs and other animals was very happy to see this change in me.
Two years later her health started detorating and she had some kidney problem and lost her control to pee. She was also unable to climb the stairs so we started give her food downstairs but after half an hour or so she still used to climb up the stairs to sleep outside our door. We tried taking her inside but she never came inside the threshold.
After few days I met an accident and came home after surgery to my leg, she understood that I am not well she waited just outside our door to see me but was not coming inside even after calling her after sometime she came inside to see me. She came and made a whinning sound trying to console me. I was so touched by her gesture.
Later on when her health detoirated more our neighbor’s started having problem with her smell, and one day they beat her with a stick and she came running inside our home right till the kitchen. She was very scared, we were all set to file a legal complaint against them but after intervention of other members and assurance to her safety we backed out. But we stopped talking to our neighbours, now the society members had her since past 10-11 years and we knew her for past 2-3 years but now the whole society was against us for feeding her. We said just because she is old and facing some health problems abandoning her is not a solution. We decided to take care of her for whatever it takes. Finally a year later her health was worst and she had got tick fever and was admitted to an hospital where she passed away. We decided not to stay in such society where people are so selfish and mean. Our society did not had a cctv or a full time watchman but just her as a guard dog not a single incident of theft happened in those years.
We decided to leave that society and sell our home as we did not wish to live there in such people who had no compassion.
Today we feed all the stray dogs in our society and wherever we see a dog in need. Today we help actively in rescue and adoption cases. Her paws changed the way i used to think. She made me into a loving and compassionate person, I thank her always. We used to call her Bhu-bhi! We miss you always and thank you for giving us the strength to help all your friends!
