On the Street and Self trained

March 8, 2022by admin

My husband and I have been feeding dogs around our locality for years. Every dog we know has their own set of strengths and are special. Let’s meet Our LANKY today – a Lovable, Shy and Lively little dog. I know it’s a terrible name but finding good names is not my talent but spotting sweet dogs is. 🙂 Lanky lives on the streets and runs miles away every time a stranger approaches him. Few years ago while feeding a few strays in our neighbourhood, Shamik (my husband) and I spotted him. We tried to feed him but he would only come close to the food, if we had moved away. It took us months to earn his trust and even longer for him to let us touch him.

So today this “Touch Me Not” puppy has transformed into a confident dog who responds to the zillion names his admirers on the street call him. 🙂
And let me narrate something that Lanky once did that will simply amazed me.
Shamik and I were late to feed the dogs one evening. We were tired after the long day and wanted to feed them and get back home soon. We fed Lanky first and went to the other dogs.  Just as we were wrapping up and about to leave we spotted Lanky again. “That’s it for today Lanky, no more food”, but just then we noticed him holding something yellow in his mouth. Lanky walked to Shamik and dropped the yellow thing at his feet. In a rush we had forgotten to pack up one of the feeding containers. Lanky had found it and came to return the empty box.

It was hard for me to believe that an untrained stray could do this. Every day I notice something new…the amazing things these dogs do. The marvelous beings that they are – Intelligent, alert, full of love and great friends to have.

Feeding them and talking to them is all we do and they give us so much love and joy in return. The eagerness with which they greet us, the unwavering faith they entrust upon us, their little demands & fuss for attention. They make you feel very special.

And NO they are not just hungry for food. Most of them will not even touch the food before you give them a pat – All they need is Love and Respect and I believe we all need that 🙂
